Mountain to Mesa Journal — Edition Eight |
As we move further into the season, communities across the Four Corners continue to find ways to gatherβindoors and out, in familiar spaces and unexpected corners of town. The Mountain to Mesa Journal is back with another clear look at whatβs happening across the region right now.
In this eighth edition, youβll find a curated selection of local events, performances, markets, and community meetups drawn from across the mountains and mesas. Some offer a reason to step outside and take in the landscape as it stands this time of year. Others invite you into warm rooms filled with conversation, music, and shared experience.
Whether youβre planning your weekend, keeping track of whatβs coming up, or simply staying connected to the broader rhythm of the Four Corners, this newsletter is designed to make that easierβstraightforward, practical, and focused on whatβs relevant.
Hereβs a look at whatβs unfolding across the region. |
It doesnβt happen every year.
There was a timeβnot all that long agoβwhen January through March in the Four Corners meant steady cold, persistent snow, and very little debate about what season it was. Winters held their ground. Storm after storm tracked across the San Juans. Side streets stayed frozen. The snowpack built slowly and reliably. No one mistook February for anything but winter.
But over the past twenty to twenty five years, something different has crept in.
Somewhere in mid- to late February, weβve begun seeing stretches of warm, windless days. Afternoon temperatures climb into the sixties, sometimes higher. South-facing slopes clear early. Desert trails dry out weeks ahead of schedule. Jackets get left in the truck. Windows crack open in the late afternoon sun.
For a few daysβsometimes a weekβit feels like the season has shifted.
Across the region, the signs show up in quiet ways. Along the Animas and the San Juan, riverbanks soften just enough to suggest movement. Cottonwoods remain bare, but their branches glow in the longer light. Runners and dog walkers reappear in numbers not seen since October. Hikers head toward lower-elevation mesas where red rock absorbs warmth and radiates it back into the air.
Itβs tempting to call it spring.
But March still has its say.
Even in these recent years of early warmth, the pattern has been consistent: a reminder follows. A cold front sweeps in from the north or west. Winds shift. Temperatures drop sharply overnight. Mud turns to frozen ruts by morning. The snow line descends again, sometimes dramatically.
And while the valley may flirt with warmth, the mountains rarely forget their role. Late-season storms continue to matter. The snowpack that feeds rivers through summer depends on them. March snowfall in the San Juans is not an anomalyβitβs a requirement.
That contrast defines this recent stretch of winters. Warm afternoons in February do not erase the reality of elevation. Much of the Four Corners sits higher than people realize. Desert basins feel mild under blue skies, but they remain vulnerable to hard freezes. A single cold night can remind gardeners why planting too early is a gamble.
Longtime residents carry that institutional memory.
They remember winters that locked in by January and refused to loosen until April. They remember years when snowbanks lingered in town well past St. Patrickβs Day. They know that the past several seasons of early warmth are not necessarily the new ruleβjust a recent pattern.
So optimism comes with caution.
Yes, people start talking about camping plans. Fly rods get restrung. Hiking boots move closer to the door. Trails at lower elevations open earlier than expected. Thereβs an unmistakable lift in energy when the light stretches into evening.
But thereβs also restraint.
The snow shovel stays accessible. One stack of firewood remains untouched. Irrigation lines arenβt fully trusted until well after the calendar says itβs safe. March has delivered sideways snow before, and it will again.
That tensionβbetween preview and realityβis part of what makes this time of year distinct. You can walk a dry desert trail in shirtsleeves and still see fresh snowfall sweeping across the La Plata Mountains. You can sit in warm sun against red sandstone while knowing that a freeze could arrive by the weekend.
Seasons here do not flip cleanly from one to the next. They overlap. They test boundaries. They negotiate their arrival.
Perhaps that is why these recent false springs feel so noticeable. After decades of harsher, more consistent winters, a stretch of February warmth feels almost borrowed. It invites us outside earlier than we expect, even as experience tells us not to get comfortable.
True spring, when it finally settles in, does so gradually. The storms of March finish their work. The snowpack stabilizes. River flows begin their steady climb. Cottonwoods leaf out in earnest. The desert greens more confidently.
Until then, we move between warmth and warning.
In the Four Corners, early warmth is not a guarantee of anything. It is a windowβsometimes brief, sometimes generous. A reminder that change is coming, but not yet complete.
And for those whoβve lived through both the harsher winters of the past and the false springs of recent years, that balance feels familiar: enjoy the sun, respect the mountains, and never assume February has the final word. |
