Mountain to Mesa Journal — Edition Seven |
Winter settles differently across the Four Corners. Snow gathers in the high country, river corridors grow quiet, and long evenings invite reflectionβand stories.
In this seventh edition, we take a brief step into regional legend with a look at La Llorona and the Animas Riverβoften translated as the βRiver of Lost Souls.β In colder months especially, when the landscape feels stripped back and still, stories like this carry a certain weight. Part folklore, part cultural memory, the legend has moved through generations in communities along the river, shaping how some view the water after dark.
Alongside that story, youβll find this weekβs curated selection of events from across the Four Cornersβwinter gatherings, performances, community happenings, and opportunities to step out despite the chill.
As always, the focus remains steady: whatβs happening now, and the storiesβpast and presentβthat continue to shape this region.
Hereβs whatβs unfolding from mountain to mesa. |
In the quiet stretches of evening, when the last light fades behind the San Juan Mountains and mist begins to lift from the water, the Animas River moves differently. The current softens. Sound carries farther. Cottonwoods along the banks shift in the dark.
For generations, many Hispanic families in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado have shared a story about these hoursβwhen the river belongs to something older than memory. They speak of La Llorona, the Weeping Woman, whose sorrow is said to follow the course of rivers across the Southwest.
The Animas itself carries a name that invites interpretation. "RΓo de las Γnimas" is commonly translated as βRiver of Souls,β though historians debate its precise origin. Some suggest it refers to lost explorers; others to spiritual language carried north from early Spanish settlements. Whatever its root, the phrase lingers. Souls. Water. Loss.
La Lloronaβs story has traveled just as far. In traditional tellings, she is a grieving mother who drowned her children and now wanders riverbanks searching for them, her cries echoing through the night. In Hispanic communities throughout the Southwest, the legend became attached to local waterwaysβnot as spectacle, but as warning. Children were told not to stray too close to irrigation ditches, acequias, or swift spring runoff. Water could nourish a valley, but it could also take what it was given.
Along the Animas, the story has found its own footing.
Some longtime residents quietly advise against crossing the river at night, especially during high water. Others recall being warned as children not to linger near its banks after dark. They describe hearing something in the currentβa sound distinct from wind or stoneβthough they rarely elaborate. The details are never quite the same, but the caution remains consistent: respect the river.
It is easy, in daylight, to see the Animas as recreationβrafters cutting through rapids, anglers casting beneath overhanging branches, cyclists following the river trail. But rivers change character after sunset. The water turns black. Depth becomes guesswork. Sound bends in unfamiliar ways. The same current that glitters at noon can feel bottomless by twilight.
Folklore has a way of attaching itself to places where uncertainty lives. The Animas, flowing from high country snowmelt through Durango and south into New Mexico, has always carried both life and risk. To some, La Llorona is a ghost story. To others, she is cultural memoryβan echo of generations who understood that water, in an arid land, demands humility.
And so the legend endures. Not loudly. Not theatrically. Just beneath the surface, moving with the current.
On certain nights, when the wind drops and the river runs steady, it is easy to imagine why the story settled hereβand why it has never quite left. |
