Mountain to Mesa Journal — Edition Six |
Another week is taking shape across the mountains, valleys, and mesas of the Four Corners, and with it comes a new round of local gatherings, community events, and seasonal traditions. The Mountain to Mesa Journal is here to keep you informed about whatβs happening nearbyβwithout requiring you to search in a dozen different places.
In this sixth edition, youβll find a practical roundup of events and activities that reflect the character of the region: small-town celebrations, outdoor meetups, local markets, performances, and opportunities to simply spend time where neighbors gather. Some are longstanding fixtures on the calendar. Others are one-time events that are easy to miss unless you know where to look.
Whether youβre planning the weekend ahead or just keeping an eye on whatβs coming up, this newsletter remains focused on relevance and clarity. No overstatement. No clutter. Just whatβs worth knowing right now across the communities that connect mountain to mesa.
Letβs take a look at whatβs happening. |
Long before Instagram geotags and travel reels, the American West was defined on filmβand much of that definition came from the landscapes of the Four Corners.
When director John Ford brought his cameras to Monument Valley in 1939 to film "Stagecoach", he did more than capture scenery. He established a visual vocabulary. Towering sandstone buttes, endless horizons, and stark desert light became shorthand for the frontier. Audiences across the country came to believe this was the West.
But the cinematic West did not stop at the desert floor.
As Westerns evolved in scope and ambition, filmmakers turned to the alpine terrain of southwestern Colorado for something Monument Valley could not provide: vertical drama. The rugged San Juan Mountainsβdense timber, high passes, rushing riversβoffered a different dimension of frontier storytelling. Actor John Wayne filmed several productions in Colorado, using locations near Ridgway and Pagosa Springs to depict sweeping cattle drives and high-country pursuits. The 1969 film "True Grit", for example, shot extensively around Ridgway, transforming the Uncompahgre Valley into Indian Territory on screen.
Farther south, near Pagosa Springs and the ancient stone towers of Chimney Rock National Monument, filmmakers found textured backdrops of forested slopes and dramatic rock formations. These mountain settings added scale and realism to Western narrativesβsuggesting isolation, hardship, and the raw physical demands of frontier life. Snow-capped peaks rising behind riders on horseback conveyed something elemental: this was not just a symbolic West, but a formidable one.
Together, the red rock deserts of the Navajo Nation and the alpine ridges of the San Juans created a composite myth. The Four Corners region supplied both the vast openness of the frontier and the rugged mountains that tested those who crossed it. Cinematographers did not need elaborate sets. The land itself carried tension, grandeur, and authenticity.
Hollywoodβs lens, however, simplified a complex region into archetypesβlawmen, outlaws, lone riders against dramatic skies. What endured was the imagery. Travelers who first encountered these landscapes in darkened theaters eventually arrived in person, seeking the West they had seen on screen. Tourism followed the camera tracks.
Today, when people imagine the American frontier, they are often picturing a blend of Monument Valleyβs sandstone silhouettes and Coloradoβs high-country horizons. The myth was filmed hereβbetween mesa and mountainβand it continues to shape how the world sees the West. |
